Retire in Denver, Colorado and you’ll be enjoying 4 full seasons, plenty of sunshine and lots of culture to keep you stimulated.  My husband and I just returned from a long weekend in Denver attending a digital marketing/branding conference. During our visit we tried to take it all in, and get a flavor for downtown Denver living.

Denver has plenty to do downtown, and it’s an extremely clean city.  We felt safe wandering around the downtown streets, pursuing the various shops, restaurants and coffee joints.  In a way, it reminded us of our hometown here in Portland (except a lot more sunshine). Fresh air and active, healthy people are in abundance

What is special about Denver?

City in a mountain setting; Unusually beautiful and extensive parks (200 of them!) and 28 recreation centers; parks outside of the city such as Red Rocks Park and Winter Park Resort ski area; The Rocky Mountains overhead; The Brown Palace Hotel; a full range of cultural and sporting opportunities; One of the world’s best airports; every type of active adult housing choice. – TopRetirementSpots.com

Enjoy 16th street mall and surrounding areas for all sorts of happenings, including some of the best street performers you’ll ever come across! Within a 3 block radius we heard an incredibly talented guitarist, a young prodigy on a ukulele, and a jazz flutist… Wow!

Retiring in Denver, Colorado

Denver is one of those cities that I’d consider quite age friendly.  Age friendly cities are walkable, have many transportation options, and they offer cultural/educational experiences for aging adults.

The mile high city is among the most expensive places to live in the U.S., but offers retirees good health care, low taxes and walkability. – The Denver Channel.com

According to SmartAsset’s true cost of living calculator, the median (home) sales price in Denver more than doubled between 2000 and 2015.  Today that price has edged upwards to $320,000. If you’re interested in renting, SmartAsset says “you can expect to pay a monthly rent of $1,220 for a one-bedroom apartment and $1,592 for a two-bedroom apartment.

Here are just a few of the reasons we like the notion of retiring in Denver, Colorado:

  • Walkable downtown
  • Opportunities to participate in outdoor activities
  • Close proximity to an abundance of healthcare resources
  • Lots of cultural assets
  • Excellent restaurants and coffee houses
  • Transportation options like light rail, busses, Uber, taxis and more

If you can handle the snow in the winter months, you’d be hard pressed to find a comparable city.  While it’s not the cheapest place to live, it offers so many age-friendly amenities that it’s near the top of our list of “outdoor towns to retire in”.
