Lisbon is blessed with warm, sunny weather year round. There are few places in the world with its diverse qualities, from traditional sophistication to lively beaches, elegant apartments to new luxury condos. Lisbon has lifestyle options for all tastes and budgets. The city is home to one of Europe’s lowest crime rates and renowned for offering high quality of life in a safe environment. The website Investopedia asked a great question back in December.  They asked “Can I retire in Portugal with $200,000 in savings?”  The answer was a resounding YES.  Author Marjorie A. Cohen writes:

Spoiler alert: Yes, you most certainly can. According to the global expat website, Expat Arrivals, “The reasonable cost of living in Portugal has attracted expats from all over the world… The country is increasingly appealing to more Northern Europeans and Britons who have spied a fine opportunity to stretch their euros and pounds on Portugal’s sun-soaked shores.” Now, you can add to that the Americans who also want to stretch their already strong dollars on those same shores. – Marjorie A. Weather in Lisbon, Portugal

Lisbon is Portugal’s largest city, but only sports around 552,700 people within the beautiful city borders, but that number grows to 2.7 million considering the greater urban areas around the city.  The climate is hot and Mediterranean.  Average temperatures are hot in the summer (averages in the high 70’s to low 80’s) and mild in the winter (high 40’s to low 50’s).  It rains in Lisbon, but it’s not unbearable by any stretch.  As a comparison, you can expect around a third less rain than an area like Portland, Oregon.

Overall Lisbon looks like a wonderful retirement destination. The perfect size city, with great weather and awesome transportation options.  This gorgeous gem is one of the oldest cities in the world and it is loaded with history.  Lisbon should be on anyone’s current top european cities to retire list. We’ll surely be adding it to ours!
